My Groundhog Day Theory
The great 1993 movie Groundhog Day with Bill Murray is easily one of my favorites. Mostly minor Spoilers Ahead for Groundhog Day, Edge of Tomorrow, and the book Replay. Within the movie, I believe that Groundhog Day never really ends and it’s a parasite that gets passed from person to person. Let me explain: There’s a theory on reddit that Phil Connors is in hell/purgatory and that Ned Ryerson is/was the devil (need link)....
Course Creators
Here’s the 3 C’s I try to follow: Create Convert Complete That is, I want to create better courses, I want to help them covert better (ie convince more people it’s worth their time), and, most important, help others complete their courses more often. Below are some course creators I find inspiration from but I do not necessarily endorse the quality of their content. I think there is a lot to learn from what others do well as well as what they can improve on....
Educational TikToks
Short form video, like TikTok or YouTube Shorts, are incredibly compelling for educators. Here are a few examples of educational content that I found interesting: https://vm.tiktok.com/ZTdsYu1Kf/?k=1 https://vm.tiktok.com/ZTdsptCN7/?k=1 https://vm.tiktok.com/ZTdssDvFy/?k=1 https://vm.tiktok.com/ZTdsst59N/?k=1 https://vm.tiktok.com/ZTdGJXU9C/?k=1 https://vm.tiktok.com/ZTdGeWxyd/?k=1 https://vm.tiktok.com/ZTdGAgbhx/?k=1 https://www.tiktok.com/t/ZTdt9geu1/?k=1 Perhaps the next wave of online educators will gain notoriety through short form video? Time will tell.
Creators Create
I’ve made over 2,000 lessons in my career. That’s 2,000+ videos ranging from 3 minutes to 25 minutes teach others how to do something. And I’ve barely scratched the surface of what I will create. I don’t tell you this to brag, not at all. I tell you to remind you, that creating videos is what I do. I am a creator. What you do defines who are you. What you value and believe will guide what you do....
Automate Everything
Anything that can be automated, should be Software is the result of ideas from people no smarter than you or I. Automation is designed by people using software that are, again, no smarter than you or I. The right automation can touch the lives of nearly every human in the world, even if they are unaware of it. Automation has been around long before software existed. Automation used to be simply a standard operating procedure and/or process....
Only the Work
What if all you did, besides eat and sleep, was focus on your work? All the books you that read are with the goal of enriching your work. All the videos you watch, enrich your work. All the conversations you have, enrich your work. All the things you listen to, enrich your work? What things would need to be cut? Perhaps it’s the things that need to be cut, are the things you should cut right away....
Writer's Block
Seth Godin has the best comeback for when people say they have writers’ block: when was the last time you had talkers’ block? Seth has a unique way of cutting through the noise and remind us that maybe we’re just avoiding to do the work. Writers’ block is often just another way for you to hide from shipping, hide from the world, and absolve you of responsibility shifting the blame on some magical thing called writers’ block....
Coffee and Diet Coke
When I was in my early 20s, I drank about 60 ounces (~1.75 liters) of Diet Coke a day. 30oz or so at lunch, 12 or so between lunch and dinner, and 18 or so at dinner. I did this practically everyday. Sugary sodas (Coke, Dr. Pepper, etc) never did the trick the way Diet Coke did. I knew I shouldn’t do it. I knew it wasn’t great for me. But I kept on going....
The Long Game
Seth Godin is one of the most prolific content creators in the world. He’s written a blog post every day for 10+ years. Think of that, every day for 10+ years. How does one even accomplish such a feat? Well, I’d argue that Seth understand the long game better than most. He looks at writing as not just a part of his practice but a part of who he is. His writing happens because, as he puts it, “it’s today....
80/20 Consume/Create
Let’s say every day you spend 100 minutes consuming content. That’s maybe 2 episodes of The Bear, 1 of the office, and 1 parks and rec. Of these 100 minutes, what if, using a timer, you created content for 20 minutes? Pen to paper. Every day. Creating new content for 20 minutes. Once the timer ends, back to consuming content. “But Justin,” you say, “I create content for a living.”...
